Causes of hotspots

 When data centers are designed they usually have excess cooling capacity installed, this raises the question, why do hotspots occur? The actual reason is the inefficient use of cooling capacity i.e., the heat load is not excessive, and the cooling capacity is adequate, but the cool air cannot get to where it’s required because of poor airflow management. Larger server rooms use devices known as computer room air handlers; these devices use mechanical refrigeration to remove the heat produced by the equipment in the server room.

 Various techniques are utilized to eliminate hotspots in a server room. They include:

  • Reduce the cooling unit set point. This measure is for emergencies only, once the cause for the hot spot has been remedied, return the set point to its standard level
  • Using a portable cooling unit, such as a spot cooler, next to a particular hot spot, this is also a temporary measure
  • You can relocate the IT equipment causing the hotspots to another rack. This technique is very efficient if a particular device is producing the hotspot
  • If the server racks are placed on raised floors, it’s vital to ensure that all openings on the floor are sealed. This prevents undesirable air leakages and improves air flow

 • For a small server room, you can add an extra computer room air conditioner; this is effective if the heat load generated by the equipment exceeds the cooling capacity of the existing cooling system
